The American College of Surgeons responds to surgeon ratings: 4 things to know

The American College of Surgeons issued a statement saying the usefulness of the “surgeon scorecard” information shared by Pro Publica and SurgeonRatings.org the week of July 13, 2015 is “questionable for a number of reasons.”

Here are four things to know, according to ACS’s statement:

1. A patient who visited both websites could potentially find the same surgeon rated differently, based on two groups using different methodologies.

2. ACS believes that use of clinically validated data would have more fully taken into account the severity of the patient’s condition when assessing surgeon performance.

3. The ACS also calls for private payers, government, professional societies and public interest groups to share the responsibility of collecting and disseminating accurate clinical data.

4. The OR is a team experience with many factors and individuals contributing to the outcome, thus, ACS believes that rating a surgeon’s skill in performing a particular operation, without factoring in these other considerations, leads to an incomplete analysis.
