How can your ASC achieve a 75% hand hygiene compliance rate?

Patients have an important part to play in increasing hand-hygiene compliance rates among providers, as found in a study conducted by Morgantown-based West Virginia University School of Medicine, according to Science Daily.

Researchers conducted a cross-sectional survey of parents of hospitalized children, adult patients and primary care physicians to asses their attitudes toward a patient empowerment tool geared toward improving hand-hygiene compliance. Researchers conducted the study at the WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Here are four key findings:

1. Most parents and adult patients reported feeling comfortable using the empowerment tool to remind healthcare personnel to perform hand hygiene.

2. Parents were 20 percent more likely to speak up than adult patients if a physician failed to perform hand hygiene.

3. Ruby Memorial Hospital increased its hand hygiene compliance rates from 28 percent in 2015 to nearly 75 percent in 2016 due to the initiative.

4. Of physician and resident respondents, 54.9 percent said patients should remind their providers to perform hand hygiene.
