Here are five things to know:
1. Healthgrades chose recipients of the Patient Safety Excellence Award based on performance for 14 patient safety indicators.
2. Healthgrades selected winners of the Outstanding Patient Experience Award by evaluating 10 patient experience measures using HCAHPS survey data.
3. In 2016, 466 hospitals received the Patient Safety Excellence Award and 448 hospitals received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award.
4. Patient Safety Excellence Award winners are 5.1 times more likely to receive a Specialty Excellence Award for spine surgery; 3.4 times more likely for orthopedics; and 2.3 times more likely for pulmonary care.
5. The company reported accidental cuts, punctures or hemorrhages; collapsed lungs; infections; and bed sores compose nearly 75 percent of all hospital patient safety events.
“Our analysis reveals that patient safety is strongly associated with high quality care, so it is vitally important to choose hospitals that perform well on these key indicators,” said Evan Marks, chief strategy officer, Healthgrades.
