Healthcare data breaches in December 2018 — Top causes, states affected & more

HIPAA Journal released its December 2018 healthcare data breach report, which showed December was one of the months with the lowest incidence of breaches.

The key details to know:

1. A total of 516,370 records were exposed, stolen or impermissibly disclosed through 23 breaches in December 2018. The number of breaches was down from 34 in November.

2. The largest healthcare breach affected Adams County, Wis., compromising the information of 258,120 individuals.

3. The top causes of breaches included 13 hacking/IT incidents, seven unauthorized access/disclosure incidents and two incidents of theft.

4. Minnesota had more breaches than any other state, with four. Arizona had the second most, with three.
