The first Zika virus case in the United States occurred in Texas, according to Medscape.

1. A traveler returning from El Salvador contracted the virus, according to the CDC.

2. New surveillance initiatives will probably be implemented.

3. Two species of Aedes mosquitoes have the ability to transmit Zika in the United States.

4. The Zika virus causes influenza symptoms in pregnant women, and birth defects in their children.

5. As the weather warms, Americans should consider covering containers filled with water, using screens or air conditioning and using insect repellents to keep mosquitoes at bay.
