5 things to know about pharmacy benefit companies attacking drug prices

Companies managing prescription drug coverage have increased participation in the war on drug prices, according to Nevada Public Radio.

Here are five things to know:

1. Companies like Express Scripts, CVS/Caremark and OptumRX are pushing back against companies developing drugs at high prices.

2. They are refusing to purchase brand-name prescriptions unless the drug developers cut them large discounts.

3. This pushback is resulting in decreased drug prices.

4. However, many consumers must choose other medications, switching to brands that are not as effective for them, because certain pharmacy benefit companies won't pay for certain brand-name drugs because of the price.

5. More than half of consumers with health insurance will not have access to certain medications under their plans, according to an Alliance Bernstein report.
