CDC issues 6 updated Zika recommendations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidance and information to prevent Zika virus transmission for pregnant women. The guidance lays out recommendations to prevent Zika transmission from sexual activity, according to abc 13.

The updates include:

1. Women with Zika who have symptoms including fever, rash, joint pain or red eyes should wait at least eight weeks after their symptoms appear, to get pregnant.

2. Men diagnosed with Zika or have symptoms should wait at least six months to engage in unprotected sex.

3. Men and women without Zika symptoms should wait at least eight weeks after their possible exposure to try to get pregnant.

4. Couples with men who have Zika or symptoms should consider using condoms or abstaining from sex for at least six months.

5. Couples with men who frequented an area with Zika but do not have symptoms should consider using condoms or not having sex for as least eight weeks after their return.

6. Couples trying to get pregnant should consult with their healthcare provider.
