Here are five things to know:
1. The EHR User-Centered Design Evaluation Framework shows a lack of focus among regulators and the industry on user-centered design and usability testing.
2. The framework evaluates the vendor’s compliance with practices for user-centered design processes based on a 15 point scale devised by MedStar’s Human Factors Center in collaboration with the AMA.
3. Raj Ratwani, PhD, scientific director of the Human Factors Center and a principle developer of the framework, said, “It is important to recognize that this framework evaluates conformity with best practices identified in human factors and usability literature for user-centered design and testing. We are not evaluating the actual usability of the product as experienced by end users.”
4. It is necessary to test EHR products to ensure the systems use clinical tools that will improve patient safety and meet the cognitive workflow and information needs of various healthcare professionals.
5. The AMA plans to develop more usable EHR products based on eight usability priorities created in 2014 by the AMA. The goal is to enhance our nation’s overall health.
