Where do physicians earn the most?

New research from the University of Chicago is working to create an accurate picture of physician earnings.

University of Chicago health economist Joshua Gottlieb, PhD, worked with a research team to create a dataset that links administrative information on physicians to tax records from 2005 to 2017.

Here are three notes on physician earnings based on region:

1. Physician incomes are the highest in parts of the Great Plains rather than on the coasts. 

2. Smaller markets tend to attract lower-earning physicians but boost their earnings. 

3. Seventy-percent of the difference in physicians’ income across areas is based on the local market.
