The study surveyed U.S. adults aged 50 to 80 years through the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging. The survey was answered by 2,110 recipients.
Respondents were asked whether they had considered having elective surgery in the past five years, and were asked to rate how concerned they were about a series of surgery-related factors.
The factors that were keeping adults from getting elective surgeries:
1. Pain or discomfort
2. Difficulty of recovery
3. Out-of-pocket costs
4. Exposure to COVID-19
5. Time needed to be off work
6. Having someone to provide care
7. Transportation
8. Inability to care for someone else
