The best state for practicing medicine is in the Midwest — Where is the worst?

Three of the top five states for physicians to practice medicine are in the Midwest, and four out of the five worst are in the South census region, according to Medscape’s Best & Worst Places to Practice 2018 report.

Medscape ranked states based on factors affecting physicians’ work life and life outside of work. Work life factors included physician compensation, malpractice, healthcare quality and burnout, while non-work factors included population lifespan, cost of living, tax burden and public health rates.

Here are the top five states:
1. North Dakota
2. Hawaii
3. Nebraska
4. Vermont
5. Iowa

Here are the five worst states to practice:
1. West Virginia
2. Louisiana
3. Mississippi
4. Kentucky
5. New Mexico
