Here are the key details to know:

1. Care migration. Payers seeking to shift inpatient care to more cost-effective outpatient settings, making ASCs a natural option for procedures such as total joints.

2. Integration. In light of Optum’s acquisition of Surgical Care Affiliates in 2017 and Tenet increasing its ownership stake in United Surgical Partners International as well as the competition between ASC management companies and health systems for ownership in ASCs increases the demand for ASCs in the marketplace.

3. Private equity. Private equity investors big and small are increasingly investing in ASCs. HealthCare Appraisers said the demand is increasing for ophthalmology, dermatology, dental and gastroenterology ASCs.

4. ASC multiples. Greater competition in the ASC market is causing ASC valuation multiples to increase.
