Here are four things to know:

1. Surgery on Sunday was founded in Lexington, Ky., in 2008 to help income eligible, uninsured or under insured individuals who aren’t eligible for federal or state assistance. Dr. Sutton established Louisville’s Surgery on Sunday in 2013.

2. Although 6 percent of Kentuckians are uninsured, the figure doesn’t necessarily mean the other 94 percent are fully covered, as numbers from The Commonwealth Fund show 12 percent of those insured under the age of 65 aren’t sufficiently insured.

3. The CDC reports Kentucky’s colon cancer rate is the highest in the country, so Surgery on Sunday Louisville has screened 80 percent of insured or underinsured adults for colon cancer.

4. Surgery on Sunday hosts surgical events once every other month, but there are plans to expand the schedule to once a month within the next year. The program also hopes to expand to Indiana and Maryland, among other states.
