JAMA Internal Medicine published the study’s findings online in a research letter.
Here are four highlights:
1. Many physicians receive more than 100 notifications each day through EHR-based inboxes.
2. The study found primary care providers received a mean of 76.9 notifications per day, with some PCPs receiving 113.5 notifications each day.
3. Specialty providers at multispecialty practices received substantially fewer notifications than PCPs at the same site. Specialists received an average of 29.1 notifications each day.
4. Compared to physicians who worked full time, part time physicians received more notifications for the duration of time spent in the clinic.
