Researchers analyzed 756 reflections and developed three common themes.

Here are three themes:

1. Based on the reflections, physicians seemed aware of their subjective feelings and how their responses impacted the amount of information patients shared with them.

2. Successful physicians will pay attention to subtleties in patient behavior. By recognizing patients’ verbal and nonverbal cues, physicians are able to gather information about patients’ backgrounds, families and cultures.

3. Physicians who thought about their own growth pinpointed areas for improvement. Those physicians who found communication problems in their practice, reconfigured communication with patients as personalized experiences.

Further, they understood multiple questions and answers with patients would result in enhanced patient care.
