The event was inspired by Peter Janes, MD’s, trip to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake there, which prompted him to start the annual event in Summit. While Peak One hosts, other healthcare organizations in the community contribute staff, space and supplies, including Vail-Summit Orthopaedics, the Summit County Public Health Department, Peak One Pain and Spine, High Country Health Care, Swan Mountain Women’s Center, St. Anthony Summit Medical Center and Vail Valley Medical Center.

Most patients who receive surgery are patients in their 20s or 30s who lack insurance and would benefit greatly from elective outpatient surgery. They patients are selected by the Summit Community Care Clinic, according to the report.
