Despite increasing healthcare consolidation, the ASC industry has remained fragmented, independent surgery centers remaining in the majority as the driver of low costs. 

The average hourly pay for nurses in the U.S. is $39.78 for registered nurses and $56.75 for nurse practitioners, according to the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational employment statistics survey.

In its 2022 "Employed Physicians Report," Medscape surveyed more than 1,350 physicians employed by healthcare organizations, hospitals, large group practices, clinics or other medical groups about their jobs.  

Anesthesiologist Raynaldo Rivera Ortiz's, MD, license has been suspended following the investigation into the death of a fellow anesthesiologist and complications several patients suffered during routine surgeries at a Dallas ASC, CBS 11 reported Sept. 9. 

According to the 2022 "Employed Physicians Report" from Medscape, the majority of career physicians are satisfied with their career hours and salary based on a survey of 1,350 physicians nationwide.

Thomas Zdeblick, MD, who was chair of orthopedics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, resigned after his plan for a majority physician-owned ASC was denied, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Sept. 12.

The average annual salary for physician assistants in the U.S. is $119,460, according to a March 31 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In 2021, physicians in physician-owned practices outproduced their hospital peers in six of the seven measured specialties, according to Medical Group Management Association's September 2022 report, "Performance and Practices of Successful Medical Groups."
