Physician medical groups are increasingly consolidating, a trend exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to VMG Health's "Annual Healthcare M&A Report 2022." 

Despite increasing healthcare consolidation, the ASC industry has remained fragmented, independent surgery centers remaining in the majority as the driver of low costs. 

The average hourly pay for nurses in the U.S. is $39.78 for registered nurses and $56.75 for nurse practitioners, according to the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational employment statistics survey.

In its 2022 "Employed Physicians Report," Medscape surveyed more than 1,350 physicians employed by healthcare organizations, hospitals, large group practices, clinics or other medical groups about their jobs.

Thomas Zdeblick, MD, who was chair of orthopedics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, resigned after his plan for a majority physician-owned ASC was denied, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Sept. 12.

The average annual salary for physician assistants in the U.S. is $119,460, according to a March 31 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
