Joseph Stalfire III, MD, a surgeon at Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente, is suing a fellow physician for allegedly submitting false medical board complaints in an attempt to get him fired, according to an April 5 report from Medscape.

Surgeons working at outpatient care centers are paid more than surgeons in any other practice setting on average, according to May 2023 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Surgeons in the five highest-paying states earn significantly more per year than the U.S. average of $343,990, according to the newest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, released April 3. 

Utah is the highest-paying state for surgeons, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
