A new survey found that 55% of healthcare workers plan to look for a  job in the next year, adding pressure to ongoing workforce shortages in the field.

The survey, conducted by The Harris Poll and commissioned by Strategic Education, included responses from 1,504 healthcare employees and 304 healthcare employers between June 26 and July 21, 2025.

Here are five takeaways from the survey:

1. Within the 55% of respondents who said they would scour job openings, interview for a new position or switch to a new role in the next 12 months, 38% said they will do so inside their organization. Another 40% said they would look outside their current place of employment,

2. The top reasons cited by respondents for planning their exit were inadequate compensation and benefits, burnout or emotional fatigue, and a lack of career advancement, personal development or education opportunities.

3. Less than 1 in 3 respondents said they feel very valued by their current employer or very loyal to them.

4. Only 1 in 5 healthcare employees in the survey said that they feel their employer is very invested in their long-term career success beyond their current role.

5. More than 8  in 10 employees in the survey believe employers should be investing in their education, and employers agree.
