Number of Medicare ASCs in 14 key specialties

There are double the number of single specialty Medicare-certified ASCs as there are multispecialty ASCs, according to the MedPAC 2017 Annual Report. There were 2,878 single specialty ASCs and 1,802 multispecialty ASCs.

Here is the breakdown of the number of ASCs in each specialty:

1. Gastroenterology: 1,027 (22 percent)
2. Ophthalmology: 1,020 (22 percent)
3. Pain management: 355 (8 percent)
4. Dermatology: 191 (4 percent)
5. Urology: 124 (3 percent)
6. Podiatry: 95 (2 percent)
7. Orthopedics/musculoskeletal: 23
8. Respiratory: 10
9. Cardiology: 9
10. OB/GYN: 5
11. Neurology: 3

Among single specialty ASCs:

12. More than two specialties: 1,421 (30 percent)
13. Pain management and neurology/orthopedics: 221 (5 percent)
14. Gastroenterology and ophthalmology: 160 (3 percent)
