Negative Gen Z stereotypes limiting career growth

Perceptions of Generation Z in the workplace have permeated stereotypes over the last several years, with the generation commonly deemed lazy, spoiled and not team players, according to a Dec. 12 report from KTRH News Radio.

While those stereotypes may persist on the internet, they are not necessarily true in the workplace. However, negative stereotypes may now be limiting the generation's job prospects.

A recent survey found that four in five Gen Z workers say these persisting opinions and stereotypes have negatively impacted their work experience. Almost half said they have stunted their career growth and promotion.

Gen Z workers often perform tasks differently than their older generation counterparts, finding easier and simpler paths to accomplish tasks more quickly.

They also often express displeasure with being overworked. They often demand more time off, mental health days and refuse to work on vacation.

Often, when they don't receive work-life balance in a role, they will abandon their roles, leading to more negative stereotypes.

To fix disconnect in the workplace, workplaces need to put in more time understanding Gen Z's wants and needs, in the daily work environment.
