Here are four things to know:
1. Surgeons at St. Mary’s Naugatuck Valley Surgical Center will begin using one of the hospital’s three da Vinci surgical robots to perform procedures beginning Dec. 1.
2. The robotic technology is designed for surgeries that treat hernias, endometriosis, oophorectomies and other procedures.
3. Overall, St. Mary’s Hospital surgeons perform around 600 procedures per year with the robotic technology, however many of those procedures are shifting to the outpatient setting. As a result, the hospital decided to install a robot in the seven-operating room ASC.
4. Naugatuck Valley Surgical Center includes gastroenterology, general surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, ENT, pain management, plastic surgery and podiatry. The robot will give surgeons a magnified 3-D high-definition system as well as instruments designed to improve the procedure.
