Here are five things to know:
1. The U.S. Medical Licensing Exam is a costly clinical skills assessment that graduates are required to pass before obtaining a medical license.
2. As of March 16, close to 11,000 have signed a petition asking for the exam, the Step 2 CS, to be removed as a qualifier of clinical knowledge.
3. The test, which costs $1,275, can only be taken in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
4. Ninety-six percent of the test’s applicants pass on the first try and it has generated $36 million in revenue from fees each year.
5. The National Board of Medical Examiners would need to vote and abolish the Step 2 CS test.
