Here’s what you need to know:
1. A team of six eye physicians recently spent a week in Christmas Island, performing 84 corrective surgeries for residents who do not have regular access to eye care.
2. Many of the residents the physicians treated suffered from advanced, but treatable, sun-related eye conditions — like cataracts and pterygium.
3. This visit was part of an established trip, in which a group of physicians from the clinic return to Christmas Island every two years. The trip is led by two ophthalmologists: Paul Jorizzo, MD, and Paul Imperia, MD.
4. Another ophthalmologist, Matt Oliva, MD, sits on the board of the Himalayan Cataract Project, which funds initiatives that treat blindness and that train physicians around the world.
5. The clinic also works with the Medford-based La Clinica health center, providing surgeries for low-income and uninsured patients.
