Male vs. female physician compensation in 2023

Male physicians earn an average of 29% more than their female counterparts according to Medscape's 2023 "Female Physician Compensation Report," published Oct. 23. 

The wage gap is an improvement from the 32% and 34% gaps of 2021 and 2020, respectively. Female physician compensation has also risen 6.4% overall in the last year. 

According to the report, female physicians earn an average of $300,000 annually, compared to male physicians, who earn an average of $386,000. 

Female physicians in primary care earn an average of $239,000, while specialists earn an average of $327,000. That is compared with male physicians who earn $286,000 and $415,000 respectively. 

Female physicians between 45 and 49 are the highest earners on average, bringing home $311,000 annually. Male physicians in the same age bracket earn $423,000.
