Majority of physicians don’t submit reimbursement requests — Here’s why

The CMS implemented an initiative in which it pays an average of $42 to Medicare beneficiaries per month for various chronic care management services that are not provided during in-person office visits. However, many physicians are not submitting reimbursement requests, according to California Health Line.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The CMS has only received reimbursement requests for 100,000 beneficiaries this year despite projections that 35 million Medicare beneficiaries are eligible for such benefits.

2. Less than 20 percent of 300 surveyed physicians take advantage of reimbursements, as reported in a recent study, according to California Healthline.

3. Some physicians may not submit reimbursement requests because they need to obtain permission from the patient to do so and patients are required to pay a 20 percent copay whenever a service is billed through the initiative.

4. Various experts claim CMS did not adequately provide instructions for properly billing under the benefits codes.

5. Physicians may not submit requests because they do not have much time to use electronic health record systems, which are needed to use the benefits.
