Licensed physician census sees more women entering workforce: 5 takeaways

The Census of Actively Licensed Physicians in the United States, 2014, was published in the Journal of Medical Regulation, according to Medscape.

The census pulled data from the Federation of State Medical Boards.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The United States saw a 4 percent increase in total number of licensed physicians since 2012. There are 916,264 licensed physicians.

2. The census revealed that 12,168 more physicians entered the industry annually than exited, between 2012 and 2014.

3. DOs make up 8 percent of licensed physicians.

4. Three-quarters of licensed physicians attended United States or Canadian medical schools in 2014.

5. Women compose one-third of the licensed physician workforce, and at an average age of 47, they tend to be younger them male physicians at 55.
