Here are three things to know:
1. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., House Appropriations subcommittee chairman, said he was concerned about the request and believes the cut could deter scientists from pursuing biomedical research. Mr. Cole’s department oversees the NIH budget.
2. During a White House meeting, industry leaders mirrored Mr. Cole’s beliefs, saying President Trump’s proposal could harm medical research in the United States.
3. A bill passed by Congress in December 2015 gave NIH a $2 billion spending.The Trump administration advocated to cut funding, but Congress instead added the funding increase, The Hill reports.
