Inpatient utilization expected to continue dropping

As outpatient volumes continue to grow, inpatient utilization continues to drop. The following are four statistics on inpatient utilization decline from a Kurt Salmon report, “Utilization of Healthcare Services.”

  • Sixty-three percent of executives surveyed expect a decrease in inpatient admissions over the next five years.
  • Sixteen percent of the respondents expect a decrease in inpatient admissions over the next five years.
  • Twenty-one percent of respondents expect no change in inpatient admissions over the next five years.
  • Increased population health management was cited as the major reason for the expected decline 42 percent of the time.
