Former CMS Administrator Andy Slavitt calls health IT ‘failed industry’ — Here’s why

Former CMS Administrator Andy Slavitt said the health IT industry has failed due to high physician dissatisfaction rates, according to Diagnostic Imaging.

Mr. Slavitt shared his thoughts during a panel at the 2017 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conference in Orlando, Fla.

Mr. Slavitt said physicians detest technology as it doesn’t work to effectively improve their practice. He said, “In every other technology they use, they are getting productivity. [Doctors] believe there is someone, somewhere [intentionally] screwing things up … and to be blunt, CMS did some of that.”

During this two-year tenure at CMS, Mr. Slavitt said the agency diverted its efforts to implementing different regulations as opposed to talking to physicians and patients about what would work best to improve work flow. However, he did say CMS worked to limit regulations last year and engage in these conversations.

To turn the HIT industry from a failure to a success, Mr. Slavitt said facilities need to stop isolating their data. Additionally, the Office of the National Coordinator for Healthcare Information Technology has regulations in the works that will encourage the open application programming interface platform. These regulations will ideally spur more innovation in the technology arena.
