Dr. David Nash: Applying baseball’s big data to healthcare

David Nash, MD, MBA, founding dean of Jefferson School of Population Health, penned a blog post recently about meeting Oakland Athletics General Manager Billy Beane at the Becker’s ASC Review 13th Annual Spine, Orthopedic & Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference + The Future of Spine.

Mr. Beane spoke about analytics at the conference — specifically sports analytics and applying them to baseball. Mr. Beane was among the pioneers of using analytics to build a team that was able to win on a tight budget.

“Beane’s breakthrough thinking is really all about applying big data to baseball,” wrote Dr. Nash. Healthcare leaders are having the same challenges applying big data to their organizations, both clinical data and cost.
