Mayo Clinic kicks off $65M surgical suite expansion — building 14 ORs, GI endoscopy center
Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic launched a $65 million expansion to its Mankato, Minn., campus. The expansion will add 14 operating rooms, a sterile processing department, 43 preoperative and postoperative patients rooms, an interventional pain medicine procedural room and a gastrointestinal endoscopy center to the hospital.

Florida Senate committee approves bill for 24-hour stays at ASCs
The Florida Senate Health Policy Committee unanimously approved a bill that would allow ASCs in the state to keep patients for at least 24 hours. The Florida House and Senate still need to approve the legislation before it’s presented to the governor.

Orthopaedic and Spine Center of the Rockies seeking $1M+ in payments from VA, 3rd party payer
Orthopaedic and Spine Center of the Rockies in Fort Collins, Colo., sent a letter to patients Nov. 30, informing them the center will charge them if missing payments from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and third-party payer Health Net were still unpaid by the end of the month.

Cyber attackers targeted Columbus (Ohio) Surgery Center and Eye Physicians in a ransomware attack. The eye center reported a “data security incident” related to a ransomware attack that may have compromised patients’ personal and health information. The attack occurred on Oct. 7 and the center is investigating the incident.

TransUnion released a new report on how millennials are reacting and interacting with healthcare insurance, payment and debt. The report found just over one-third of millennials don’t plan for medical or healthcare expenses in their budgets, and 80 percent don’t have health savings accounts to pay for out-of-pocket expenses.

Patient sues physician for talking on the phone during outpatient procedure
A 70-year-old woman filed a lawsuit against Eric Fishman, MD, and Yonkers, N.Y.-based Westmed Medical Group, claiming Dr. Fisher talked on his cell phone while performing an outpatient varicose vein procedure.
