Health Affairs analyzed the physician workforce over the years using Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment Statistics files between 2005 and 2015.
Here are six statistics to note:
1. In the aforementioned time frame, the healthcare sector witnessed a net increase of 2.6 million jobs.
2. This figure accounted for 35 percent of total U.S. job growth.
3. Of these 2.6 million jobs, physicians filled 6 percent of these slots.
4. Within those 10 years, PCP jobs increased nearly 8 percent.
5. The percentage of PCPs per capita has stayed flat over those 10 years, however.
6. Specialist job growth increased nearly six times the rate of PCPs.
