6 statistics on the changing physician workforce

The number of primary care physicians has remained relatively stagnant in recent years, raising concerns about the looming physician shortage.

Health Affairs analyzed the physician workforce over the years using Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment Statistics files between 2005 and 2015.

Here are six statistics to note:

1. In the aforementioned time frame, the healthcare sector witnessed a net increase of 2.6 million jobs.

2. This figure accounted for 35 percent of total U.S. job growth.

3. Of these 2.6 million jobs, physicians filled 6 percent of these slots.

4. Within those 10 years, PCP jobs increased nearly 8 percent.

5. The percentage of PCPs per capita has stayed flat over those 10 years, however.

6. Specialist job growth increased nearly six times the rate of PCPs.
