5 facts on physicians with H-1B visas by state, employer

JAMA published a study finding the number of physicians with H-1B visas varies greatly by state and sponsoring employer.

The study analyzed 2016 data from the US Department of Labor Office of Foreign Labor Certification. In 2016, 10,491 labor condition applications had certification for use in physician H-1B positions by 2,156 sponsoring employers.

Here are five facts:

1. New York had the most applicants at 1,467 in sum.

2. Michigan and Illinois followed New York with the highest number of applicants, respectively.

3. North Dakota had the highest percentage of the H-1B applicant physician workforce at 4.7 percent.

4. Twenty four states had less than 1 percent of H-1B applicants and the top three states comprised 31 percent of applicants.

5. The leading four sponsoring employers with certified H-1B applicants for physicians include
●    William Beaumont Hospital (El Paso, Texas)
●    Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center (New York City)
●    Cleveland Clinic Foundation
●    Presence Saint Francis Hospital (Evanston, Ill.).
