5 essential ways to stifle burnout

Here are five essential ways to combat burnout.

1. Recharge your batteries. If you are able, consider taking a sabbatical to evaluate your life in terms of the direction you are taking and whether that is the path you desire. During an extended vacation, try a new class or something out of your comfort zone.

2. Vary your clinical focus. Change your direction within your specialty. Within a given specialty, a physician has many options for focus, and a change may be an optimal way to avoid burnout.

3. Try a concierge practice model. Have patients come in to learn about your wealth of knowledge, rather than only seeing patients with chronic conditions. Preventative medicine is the way of the future, and having chronic patients who don’t improve can make a physician feel helpless.

4. Consider non-clinical jobs. Online resources can help you find a non-clinical job well suited to you. Even if you don’t pursue these options, it is always beneficial to look and keep your options open.

5. Chat with a career coach. Professional advisers are great contacts who can help you either find alternatives or find ways to limit your burnout.
