13 physician specialties spending more time on paperwork in 2023

Thirteen physician specialties have reported spending more hours per week on paperwork and administrative tasks in 2023 than in 2022, according to Medscape’s 2022 and 2023 physician compensation reports, which surveyed more than 10,000 physicians in 29 specialties.

  1. Oncology: +2.2 hours
  2. Otolaryngology: +1.9 hours
  3. Critical care: +1.7 hours
  4. Physical and rehabilitation medicine: +1.6 hours
  5. Family medicine: +1.4 hours
  6. Urology: +0.6 hours
  7. OB-GYN: +0.4 hours
  8. Nephrology: +0.3 hours
  9. Neurology: +0.3 hours
  10. Psychiatry: +0.3 hours
  11. General surgery: +0.3 hours
  12. Emergency medicine: +0.2 hours
  13. Pediatrics: +0.1 hours
