1. Forty-one percent of ophthalmologists are considered “burnt out.”

2. On a scale of one to five, ophthalmologists rated the severity of their burnout 4.05.

3. Rated from one (not at all important) to seven (extremely important), the top three causes of ophthalmologist burnout are:

  • Too many bureaucratic tasks – 4.98
  • Impact of the ACA – 4.29
  • Increasing computerization of practice – 4.23

4. Female ophthalmologists are more likely to be burnt out at 52 percent over their male counterparts at 36 percent.

5. By age, 22 percent of physicians 35 or under reported burnout.

6. Physicians between 36 to 45 years old and 46 to 55 years old both reported 50 percent burnout rate.

7. Physicians aged 56 to 65 years old reported 45 percent burnout.

8. Twenty-five percent of physicians 65 years old or over reported burnout.

9. Sixty-four percent of burnt out ophthalmologists reported their health as “very good” or “excellent” compared 78 percent of ophthalmologists who weren’t burnt out.

10. Twenty-seven percent of burnt out ophthalmologists reported their health as “good” compared to 19 percent of ophthalmologists who were not burnt out.

11. Ten percent of burnt out ophthalmologists reported their health as “poor” or “fair” compared to 3 percent of ophthalmologists who were not burnt out.
