Wisconsin helps consumers grasp health literacy: 5 takeaways

Many Americans don't understand aspects of their healthcare coverage plans, based on a Kaiser Family Foundation 2015 survey, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.

Here are five takeaways:

1. Based on the survey, 74 percent of organizations helping consumers enroll in health insurance had to explain basic terminology.

2. The resources outlining health plans demand high health literacy levels. That is, consumers must possess numerical, comprehension, reading and writing skills, plus specific health literacy skills.

3. In Wisconsin, 39 percent of adults were below basic health literacy levels in 2003.

4. To help with this complicated process, Wisconsin offers "Covering Wisconsin," which provides training and support to regional enrollment networks.

5. Wisconsin residents may seek assistance from "Covering Wisconsin" to learn about coverage options and receive materials in understandable language.
