Here’s what you should know:
1. ICD-11 has been in the works for over a decade. It is the first completely electronic version of the ICD, which contains around 55,000 unique codes for injuries, diseases and causes of death.
2. ICD-11 will go into effect Jan. 1, 2022.
It will be presented at the World Health Assembly in May 2019. The advance preview is intended to give countries time to plan how to use the new version, prepare translations and train health professionals.
3. The ICD-11 comprises new chapters on traditional medicine and sexual health. The addictive disorders section now includes gaming disorder.
4. The new version seeks to better capture data on healthcare safety. Updates were made to help identify and reduce unnecessary events that may pose health risks, such as unsafe workflows in hospitals.
5. Codes relating to antimicrobial resistance more closely align with the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System in the ICD-11.
6. WHO’s ICD team received over 10,000 proposals for revisions from healthcare professionals.
“A key principle in this revision was to simplify the coding structure and electronic tooling – this will allow health care professionals to more easily and completely record conditions,” said WHO Classifications Terminologies and Standards Team Leader Dr. Robert Jakob.
