When trying to enroll in healthcare plans, young adults face opposition — 5 things to know

Several obstacles prevent young adults from enrolling in healthcare plans, according to Kaiser Health News.

Here are five things to know:

1. Young adults find difficulty when transitioning from children's Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program to adult Medicaid. Only 31 states, as well as Washington, D.C., have expanded coverage, and some coverage notices states send to young adults only inform them they are no longer covered, but will not include information on how to enroll in a new plan.

2. Young adults have little or no credit history, which makes proving their identity, the first step in the application, a frustrating experience in the process.

3. According to CMS, the uninsured rate has decreased by more than 50 percent among young people between 19 years and 25 years old.

4. Special enrollment periods now have new restrictions that may prevent young adults from obtaining coverage. These new restrictions require people to show official documentation that they experienced certain life events that allow them to enroll during special enrollment periods, such as marriage, a child's birth, loss of another type of coverage or a permanent move.

5. Young Invincibles, an advocacy organization for young people, aims to convince young adults about the healthcare coverage's importance.
