Vermont Approves Insurance Exchange to Serve as Springboard for Single-Payor Healthcare

The Vermont House has given preliminary approval to a bill that would set up a state-run health insurance exchange, according to a Boston Globe report.

Vermont’s version of the exchange would go “further than most,” according to the report. The exchange would serve as a platform for the state’s planned government-run single-payor healthcare system.

According to supporters, the bill will help individuals and families afford health insurance and will give small businesses the option of not providing employee health insurance starting in 2014. Most workers could instead buy health insurance through the exchange with federal subsidies.
