UnitedHealth reports $720M losses on federal health insurance exchange: 5 highlights

UnitedHealth Group reported losses on its individual-market health plans reached $720 million in 2015, according to Business Insurance.

Here are five highlights:

1. The $720 million loss is almost $300 million more than estimates UnitedHealth made a few months ago.

2. UnitedHealth’s fourth quarter profit fell 19 percent to $1.22 billion.

3. However, UnitedHealth’s full year profit reached $5.81 billion, a 3.5 percent increase from 2014.

4. In November 2015, UnitedHealth predicted a net loss of $425 million on its ACA policies.

5. UnitedHealth said its huge ACA losses were due to sicker-than-average consumers enrolling in its health plans and many people signing up for insurance after the open-enrollment window.
