Trump threatens to withhold ACA subsidies: 5 points

In an interview with The Economist on May 11, President Donald Trump said he may stop providing payers ACA subsidy payments, according to The Hill.

1. President Trump said he could stop the subsidies “anytime time I want.”

2. Cost-sharing reduction payments currently total nearly $7 billion annually.

3. Several payers have vowed to completely exit the exchanges if the government ceases the subsidies.

4. Republicans have long opposed the payments, which an ACA provision created. The House GOP sued the Obama administration for paying the subsidies without Congress approval.

5. The payments are only set for the next month and President Trump indicated he does not plan on continuing the payment past that time frame.
