Texas Medicaid program won’t cover continued recommended pediatric autism treatment: 5 things to know

Texas Medicaid is cutting the coverage for a recommended autism treatment for children, the San Antonio Current reports.

Here’s what you should know.

1. The state’s Medicaid program covers 30 hour of treatment per month up to six months.

2. Autism specialists suggest patients need 20 hours of treatment a week for several years to make a difference.

3. Peter Hofer, an attorney with Disability Rights Texas, said the state previously offered extensive ABA coverage, but phased it out.

4. Texas is in the minority of states that don’t fully cover ABA treatment through Medicaid. The state of Texas has approximately 160,000 children with autism.

5. The state reportedly covers 4 percent of children with abbreviated ABA treatment.
