Here’s what you should know.
1. Through the first quarter of the year 1.3 million enrolled in the healthcare exchanges. That means 27.3 million or 8.6 percent of the population is still uninsured.
According to the National Health Interview Survey, that is the lowest percentage ever recorded.
2. As enrollment continues on a year-to-year basis, the percentage of people buying health insurance is decreasing.
3. Since the ACA became law in 2010, 21 million people have purchased health insurance.
4. The 2017 sign-up season is predicted to be “tough,” as insurers increase premiums or pull out of the exchanges entirely.
5. Some “independent experts” believe the law, in its current form, has run its course.
“Multiple initiatives are needed to have a major impact on further reducing the uninsured population,” Altarum Center for Sustainable Health Spending’s Paul Hughes-Cromwick said.
