Practices Largely Behind on ICD-10 Prep, Need to Renew Focus

Many healthcare practices have been hoping for another ICD-10 deadline extension and have fallen behind on preparations for the Oct. 1, 2014, deadline, according to a Health Leaders Media report.

CMS made it abundantly clear recently that no such extension will come. Still, data from the American Health Information Management Association found 50 percent of providers were still in the beginning states of implementation last fall while 25 percent had not even formed ICD-10 steering committees.

Practices should now be putting major focus into preparing for the code set switch. Starting now will ensure time for testing all aspects of the practice that could be impacted by ICD-10. Physicians and practice leaders need to emphasis the urgency in the transition to get the proper financial backing and organizational support to make the transition a success.
