The study compared patient volume and reimbursement at 30 practices in the two years after EHR implementation. The practices submitted an average of 94 additional ancillary procedures each quarter, but had an average of a 108 patient decrease in volume each quarter.
Despite the dip in volume, the practices recorded increased revenue, which could not be attributed to either upcoding or raised rates.
The researchers concluded that EHR-driven efficiency allows practices to perform fewer procedures and remain financially healthy.
