Poll: Voters support Medicaid work requirement — 6 things to know

Morning Consult and Politico surveyed 1,997 registered voters to gather their thoughts on implementing a work requirement for Medicaid beneficiaries.

Here's what you should know:

1. Approximately 51 percent of respondents were in favor of a work requirement, while 37 percent opposed the proposal, with an error margin of plus or minus 2 percent.

2. Republicans advocate for the proposal while Democrats have historically been against work requirements.

3. Work requirements are illegal per federal statute, but President Donald Trump supports the idea. HHS is reviewing waiver requests from four states wishing to implement such a requirement.

4. When analyzing the poll by political party, 67 percent of Republicans supported the proposal while 52 percent of Democrats opposed the idea. Around 46 percent of Independents supported a work requirement.

5. Kaiser Family Foundation CEO and President Drew Altman said to Morning Consult if a work requirement was implemented it could be met through a number of criteria including: looking for a job, getting training for a job or working towards earning a general education degree.

6. Mr. Altman also said the work requirement would only impact a small portion of Medicaid enrollees because of disabilities or caretaking responsibilities.
