New payer consortium aims to help specialty providers with ICD-10 transition

A new consortium, which includes Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Humana and several other payers, are working together on strategies to help smaller providers get ready for ICD-10, according to an ICD-10 Monitor report.

The consortium plans to meet with healthcare provider specialty groups and help them focus on ICD-9 codes that each specialty group submits most often, and then help them learn the CMS-approved ICD-10 translations for those codes. Healthcare providers can then test their knowledge of those codes through several content-based testing environments.

“The consortium approach is in response to concerns raised in testimony on Capitol Hill at recent NCVHS hearings that payers may not be able to test with a large number of providers,” said Sid Hebert, director of the ICD-10 implementation team at Humana, according to the report.
